Scholastic Bookclub

The latest Scholastic Bookclub flyers are out and you child should have brought them home yesterday. There are spares in the classroom if you missed out. Ordering from these is a great way to support the school and a great way to buy cheap gifts for children's birthday and Christmas presents - I always stock up!! A lot of the books are also Lexile graded so students can use them to improve their reading and complete some Lexile quizzes for points!! Orders are due on Monday 9 June at the front office.

Assembly... coming up!!!

Don't forgot our assembly will be this Friday, first thing in the morning in the undercover area. There is no special dress requirements so students DON'T need to bring clothes in now, just come to school on the day in free dress (with uniform in their school bag to change into after the assembly). Students can bring in additional props we have discussed. Room 23 will be putting on a little play and there will be certificates and awards handed out. We will have 3 merit certificate winner, 2 Science award winner's and 2 Values award winners. I will be calling winners parents this week to let you know - but I don't tell students as I like it to be a surprise! Hope to see you on Friday. Miss Calvert

Zahra Recount

Long ago there lived a girl called Zahra who lived in Africa with one tree left. But time was running out because there was only 3 leaves left and not a lot of water left. After quite a lot of time there was a tiny drop left of water. When she used up all of the water she lay down and started to cry. When she had finished crying the tears brought the tree back to life. It turned purple and grew. After it grew it sprung some leaves. It made some bushed grow and she fell into a deep sleep. I liked it because it had a moral like hard work pays off in the end. By Bailey
Zahra lived in a desert in Africa. There was not much water so she went where the dying tree was and splashed the water on it. Then she ran back and forth again and again. She got so puffed there was no water. So she fainted and a little bit of sweat on her cheek landed in the ground and she fell down. The tree began to grow and it was awesome. The tree had colours on it. It grew and grew leaves and shaded her and she went to sleep with a smile and I thought that the tree was cool. By Siena
There once was a little girl named Zahra. She lived in a country called Africa. She had a plant. "It can't survive in this hot weather" she said so she went and worked all day. Soon only one drip was left in the well. Then she went straight to sleep. One drop of her sweat came down and landed on the plant. After a second BLOOM! the tree began to grow. So I think the story's moral is about never give up no matter what you do. By Cathy

Just some notes....

Students were issued with new diaries yesterday. These are to replace the ones previously given that had some date errors in them. Students are to put their diaries on my desk every morning. I then check them for any messages or notes and at the end of the day stamp them if the student has had a good day. As a busy working Mother myself, I understand that it is sometimes hard to find the time to pop in to see the Teacher or call. If you have any questions or just want to touch base please email me: julia.calvert@education.wa.edu.au and I will respond as soon as I can. If however, you want more detailed information about how your child is going please make an appointment. Please remember that if your child is absent from school you must provide a note or call the office to let us know. Thank you.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Today we participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime. National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 14th successful year it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book that explores age appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Grades F to 6 and the pre-school Early Learning Years Framework. After reading the story, Too Many Elephants, students made an elephant picture by tracing around their hands. Tawanda, Carlo, Jasmine and Jenise are pictured below with their elephant hands. Ask your child what national and simultaneous mean. Post a comment if they remember!!

Garden Update

While Kaylee is away it is up to Asher to keep track of our sunflower plants growth. We have noticed that some of the flowers are ready to come out. The vegetables, however have not fared very well with the heat and the soil. We have decided we need to enrich the soil before planting anything else.

What a Multi-Cultural Classroom We Have!! - Maths in Action ...

We did a survey of our class this week to see what countries the students come from. We collected this data and then displayed it on Miss Calvert's GIANT world map. It was amazing to see how many countries are represented in our little class. We discovered that we have students from nearly every continent - just not North America or Antarctica. One student even remarked that it's like our classroom is a mini world! Students then used this data to produce column graphs.

NAPLAN and ASSEMBLY

NAPLAN is over and we can all breathe a sigh of relief! I was very proud of the way that all my lovely students approached the tests - with eagerness and confidence. Now we have a long wait til Term 4 when the results come back. In the meantime, we have our assembly to concentrate on. We have already started rehearsing and some students already know their parts off by heart! We have been making some props and discussing outfits. Our assembly is in Week 5, Friday, 30 May in the undercover area first thing in the morning. We hope many parents are able to come along and watch our performance. Other than that, we are now back to school as usual! Miss Calvert
